The Arts Loan Fund Celebrates 45 Years of Impact

45 Years and Counting

For 45 years, the Arts Loan Fund (ALF) has supported the sustainability and growth of nonprofit art and cultural organizations in Northern California. Created by funders in 1981 to alleviate short-term cash-flow crunches, the ALF fills gaps for arts organizations struggling to access capital. 45 years of existence have brought about many iterations of the Fund, while consistently centering community and adapting to the needs of the field.

In a time when funders are searching for innovative ways to support the nonprofit sector, the Arts Loan Fund is anchored in its founding model to support organizations in the current moment. The ALF is a revolving loan fund — when loans are paid back, the funds are returned to support the next organization in need.

Providing loans is something philanthropy is just beginning to innovate around, and the ALF is a cornerstone example in the Bay Area. Its funding supports not only emergencies, but it also assists organizations in exploring new ways of creating revenue, provides facility loans for much-needed remodels or upgrades, and can even equip organizations with up-front cash (ex: when grants are structured as reimbursable, artist payment is needed prior to a performance, or to swap high-interest credit card debt for low-interest loans).

The impact of the Arts Loan Fund far exceeds its size. The Fund is fueled by unique cross-sector partnerships with government, corporate, and private philanthropy and adapts in response to sector needs as it did during the COVID-19 pandemic. In its existence, it has activated nearly 1,500 loans amounting to over $36 million to organizations in Northern California. Just in the past 23 years, ALF has supported over 200 organizations.

Why We Do It

Arts organizations face unique cash-flow challenges, including delayed grant awards, seasonal earned and contributed income, and complexity in projecting program tuition and ticket sales.

While large nonprofit institutions and businesses are able to access credit through commercial lenders, community arts groups are generally ineligible or are subject to high interest rates. The ALF works to fill this gap and to provide a useful financial tool for small and mid-sized arts organizations.

An Invitation to Grow Your Impact

In honor of the ALF’s 45 years, we’re fundraising $500,000 to strengthen the fund and increase the corpus available to lend to arts and culture organizations. We invite you to join the 13 foundations supporting the Arts Loan Fund corpus, invest in arts and culture organizations, and support a thriving Northern California region.
